Again, it's been too long since I've gotten on here to relate my wondrous experiences to you lovely folk. Surprisingly enough, quite a bit has happened since we last spoke. Alright, let's see, there were three major things:
- I got a job
- I got an apartment
- ...I dunno, I'm gonna say, EPA?
Well I guess that's it. But still! That's quite a few accomplishments in just one month! So let's start chronologically. Jobness. I got a job working at Pacific Movie Theatres here in wonderful Los Angeles. I'm a Talent Member, which is actually even more awesome than the title implies. I get to sell popcorn, sweep up theatres after the little kiddies have had their way with them, clean bathrooms, clean the lobby, sell movie tickets, and rip said tickets in half, all while wearing a sweet hat. Bonus Box: I get 4 free movie tickets PER DAY. So if you live in the Los Angeles area and want to go see a movie FOR FREE gimme a ring. We'll do lunch. It'll be great. Unfortunately this means I'll be unable to come home for the holidays. As the theatre is located at The Grove (I know, now awesome is that?), which is an outdoor mall in Beverly Hills, which is a prominently Jewish neighborhood, that means Christmas is one of the busiest times of years for us. So yeah.
Moving on, I have an apartment now! To be clear, it's the same apartment I've been staying in since I moved out to LA in March, but with ONE BIG DIFFERENCE. I am now living in an actual room (not the couch) and paying actual rent (not just keeping the fridge stocked with beer). My buddy Rickabus decided several weeks ago that it was time for him to get his own place so he could have a little more "private time" if you know what I mean *wink wink nudge nudge*, which made it perfect, because he moved out, Froggy moved into his old, larger room, and I moved into Froggy's old room! And amazingly enough, I got my job literally a week before I had to pay the first rent check. w00t for timing.
So I've moved in, and started to get settled, which is good. I've gotten my posters and pictures hung up, so now this place actually looks like a place where a human being lives. Here's some snapshots of the place, so you can see it in all its' glory.
Bedroom:
The most conspicuously missing object is of course a bed, but as you can see I have very serviceable foam pads, and I was able to scavenge a bedframe from the garbage, now I just need to find a cheap (aka: free) mattress that isn't infested with bedbugs. And yes, one entire wall of my room is mirrors. #bejealous
Bathroom:
That one's just straight-up awesome.
Hallway:
Featuring Froggy's Cave of Doom in the background.
Kitchen:
See how I cropped out all the dirty dishes?
Dining Room/Living Room:
I still need to get some throw pillows for the couches...
There's also an outdoor patio, but it's dark and we need to get the light fixed out there. You'll see it soon though, I promise.
So that's the grand tour. Hope you liked it. If you have any interior design tips, keep them to yourself.
Which brings us to the last major development of the past month. Now bear with me, because this takes a bit of a setup. So on Sunday I decided to have a bit of a housewarming/dinner party/inaugural grillfest. This was to celebrate my getting an apartment finally/buying my first grill/Ricka getting a new apartment/I like steaks. We all went to Ikea that afternoon to get more home furnishings, and as we were leaving, I got a call from one Mr. Matthew Van Oss, who also recently moved out to LA to get into the acting scene.
Turns out Mr. Van Oss, or Matt, as we like to call him, got off work that evening and wanted to finally hang out, since we hadn't had a chance to yet since both getting to town. So he came over and it was a regular dinner party. Awesome! Even more awesome was when he told me how he's been doing in the three months he's been out here. He booked a national commercial, and booked an online sketch comedy gig to be used on sites like Funny Or Die. And while the commercial probably won't be aired, and the sketch hasn't made it onto any humor sites yet, he's still miles ahead of me. While I told myself and almost everyone I talked to that I was focusing on getting a job and apt first, the truth was I was scared to really start putting myself out there. So seeing that Matt has already been doing all this stuff despite being here for less time than I, really kicked my ass into gear.
It also helped that he mentioned that there is this option on the website www.actorsaccess.com to get a 12-month subscription, which allows you to submit to as many acting projects as you want, instead of having to pay $2 per submission. So that was a game changer. I hadn't been submitting as much lately because the cost was so high, but knowing that I could get unlimited submissions meant I could start submitting to as many as I could find every day. Awesome! And that's exactly what I started doing. And low and behold, today I heard back from one of the short independent films I submitted to, and was asked to come in for an open audition on Friday! Holy Balls! I actually landed my first legit audition in this town! Granted, it's a short, and there's no pay. But guess what? I don't care! I have an audition on Friday, and I'm going to knock it out of the park!
So I know this one has been epicly long, but thanks for sticking with it. I'm hoping now that I've got my life mostlyish sorted out now I will start getting back on a more regular posting schedule, so that I can get more of you guys hooked and coming back for more of my casual witticisms and clever anecdotes. Also, look forward to a new blog in the near future on my experiences riding my bike in the great city of LA.
